A YOUNGSTER has scooped the 2011 Le Tournoi Sailing Bursary, sponsored by Investec Specialist Bank.

Elana St George, 12, was presented with a £500 cheque, trophies and a Gill UK sailing jacket by Kevin Allen, head of Investec Bank in Jersey.

The bursary was open to youngsters in Jersey with a passion for sailing and aims to provide sports men and women with the chance to further their skills.

‘While there are a number of opportunities for sailing in our community, youngsters can still find it tough to realise their ambitions due to a number of factors, be they financial or otherwise. This new bursary aims to identify talent, ambition and needs, and help the winner to achieve their dreams. This is at the very heart of the Le Tournoi ethos,’ said Le Tournoi chairman Andy Le Seelleur

‘We are extremely grateful to Investec Bank (Channel Islands) Limited as we would not have had the funds to offer this bursary without their support.’

Elana began sailing two years ago and has since competed in Jersey, the UK and France. She has been selected for the RYA South Zone Squad and the Jersey sailing team at the 2012 Jeux Des Isles to be held in Sardinia in May.

‘Travelling to and from the UK to train with the RYA South Zone Squad is costly and having been awarded the bursary I am able to put some of the money towards this,’ said Elana.

‘As well as participating in competitions I would like eventually to qualify as a sailing instructor. To do this I need to gain RYA powerboat 2 rating so that I can qualify as a RIB helm, so the rest of the bursary will go towards this.

‘It is thanks to the young instructors at St Catherine’s, having not come from a sailing background, that I have learned to sail and I want to pass on the knowledge that I will gain from qualifying as an instructor,’ she said.

Investec Bank (Channel Islands) Limited has sponsored Le Tournoi for three years now and during that time has witnessed the fantastic work done by the sports charity to enable individuals such as Elana to develop their skills and experience,’ said Mr Allen.

‘The three-year commitment we have made to funding the sailing bursary is an extension of our support and contribution to the community in which our business operates.’

Investec has committed to sponsoring the bursary for three consecutive years.

Nominations for the 2012 Le Tournoi bursary will open later this year.
