Waitrose supermarkets across the Channel Islands and UK are helping customers increase their support for local communities this Christmas.
All Waitrose shops have invited a local food bank to carry out collections outside the branch in the run up to Christmas. This will give Waitrose customers the opportunity to buy an extra grocery item from a suggested shopping list, which will be distributed to people in need in the local community.
Two local charities have already reaped the benefits of the food bank collection initiative. On Saturday 1 December the Salvation Army collected outside Waitrose St Saviour with customers donating 981 food items which equates to a spend of £1494.19.
St Vincent de Paul Society also held a food bank collection at the Waitrose St Saviour branch on Saturday 24 November. The charity, which operates from the Welcome Centre at St Thomas’ Church, offers food parcels to those who are suffering hardship in Jersey.
6 volunteers from the charity were in store for the collection and were helped by 5 Partners from Waitrose who offered their assistance through the Partner Volunteering Scheme. Partners were on hand to explain how the food bank collection worked.
In total Waitrose customers donated 581 food items which equates to a spend of £882.71.
Gio Pollano from St Vincent de Paul Society said: “The St Vincent de Paul Society are grateful to Waitrose and their customers for their support. The groceries donated will be of great assistance to the Society in its work with those experiencing hardship and struggling to make ends meet, especially over the winter months.”
On Friday 14 and Saturday 15 December Communicare will be collecting outside Waitrose Red Houses.
Waitrose is also giving an additional £1m to local good causes through its award-winning Community Matters ‘green token’ scheme this November and December. The supermarket is donating this additional money by cutting back on the production costs of its ‘Giving more this Christmas’ TV advert which features Delia Smith and Heston Blumenthal against an uncharacteristically stark backdrop.
Shoppers at Waitrose St Helier, St Saviour and Red Houses , will be able to vote with a green token for the charity that they would like to benefit from a share of a £3,000 donation, instead of £1,000 a month (convenience shops will be donating £1,500 a month, instead of £500).
Duncan Langston, Branch Manager of Waitrose St Saviour, said: “We’ve always been committed to supporting the communities in which we serve, but we feel that it is important that we do even more this Christmas to help those in need. As well as increasing our donations, we’re also giving our customers the chance to share in the spirit of the advert by supporting our local food bank with the really valuable work they carry out in our area.”
