The secrets to a successful career were explored by Barclays employees as they attended a series of workshops and interactive sessions as part of the company’s recent Careers Day.

The Barclays Women’s Initiatives Network (WiN) organised the event which included a fitness and nutrition breakfast presentation from staff at Carrefour Gym, a speed networking session, a ‘managing your career’ and ‘career conversations’ workshop and a presentation on careers at Barclays from Catherine Grum, Director, responsible for Wealth Advisory EMEA, who was visiting the local operation from London.

WiN Chair Carol Bisson was pleased that staff from right across the Jersey business took the opportunity come together and take part in the Careers Day.

“The event was a great opportunity for Barclays staff at all levels to get practical advice and to learn more about the different career paths that Barclays has to offer.

“The day covered a number of different career questions from achieving a healthy work/life balance to the importance of networking and to discussing your career plans with your manager. It was also a chance for staff to put faces to names and speak with staff in all parts of the business who they may not normally get the opportunity to meet,” said Ms Bisson.

Catherine Grum presented on the development of her career with Barclays and how she worked her way up the ladder from a law graduate to head of Wealth Advisory (EMEA). Her presentation included her top tips for a fulfilling career.

“It’s very important to have a career plan, to identify who your career mentors are and to talk to them about what you want to achieve. You have to believe you have a choice and take control, this way you’ll be in the driving seat.” said Miss Grum.

WiN was launched in 2009 to help develop, encourage and motivate the people who work for Barclays. The network meets regularly and runs a number of events throughout the year tackling issues that affect the local workforce and providing development opportunities to support Barclays employees to advance their careers with the company.
