Tales from the Cockpit

British racing driver James Walker and Derek Warwick, an ex-Formula One driver and President of the British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) at Silverstone, entertained an F1 focused audience in a sell-out event hosted by Quilter Cheviot Investment Management at Victoria College last Thursday.

The careers and opinions of three famous drivers were explored during an enthralling evening which included a screening of the award-winning documentary Senna, looking at the life of racing legend Ayrton Senna, and an insightful question-and-answer session with James and Derek.

Sara Clews, Development Director of the Victoria College Foundation, said: “James recently spoke at one of our assemblies and inspired several boys to consider a career in motor racing. Following on from this we developed the idea for the Ayrton Senna Evening and so with the generous support of our sponsors, Quilter Cheviot, an idea was born. We were delighted to see an audience mix of students, staff, parents and guests of our sponsor.”

The evening included a display of racing memorabilia provided by James and Derek, featuring helmets and suits worn over the years, plus trophies and pictures close to their hearts. There was also a silent auction of signed photographs including a rare image of Derek, Nikki Lauda and Senna at the British Grand Prix in 1984, and a Grand Prix raffle with a pair of tickets generously donated by Derek Warwick, helping to also raise money in support of Headway Jersey.

Tim Childe, the head of Quilter Cheviot’s Jersey office, added, “We were delighted to be able to support this event and help to enable The Foundation to invest in the future education of young people with their new bursary. The stories of James and Derek certainly gave everyone a real insight into the world of motor racing past and present.”
