Skipton Open Studios 2014 starts Friday with three days of community art events in the Royal Square – and the launch of a weeklong taster exhibition, at CCA Galleries International.
Now in its seventh year, Skipton Open Studios 2014 involves 57 emerging and guest artists taking part – including four from France – opening their studios or working in historic locations over the weekends of 28 and 29 June and 5 and 6 July. The festival is organised by the Jersey Arts Trust and sponsored by Skipton International Limited.
Skipton Open Studios Project Manager Sasha Gibb said: ‘After the scale of the Norman’s mural the weekend before last, we love the intimacy of the Royal Square. Public involvement, combined with the enthusiasm and good humour of the artists involved is the key to the continued success of Skipton Open Studios. This year’s exhibition is phenomenal and artists will be on hand at both CCA Galleries International and in the Royal Square to guide and advise the public.”
Le Rocquier School has been helping artists Ian Rolls, Alasdair Healy and Kerry-Jane Warner with their ‘instant portrait booth’ with a difference. Javier Belmont, one of the Jersey/French exchange artists will be joining local artists in the interactive portrait sessions from the booth.
L’Office du Jèrriais and artists from Jersey and France, working alongside primary school children, will be painting large canvas banners in the Royal Square, and the public are invited to join in. In addition, Arthur Lamy – the Blue Badge Guide – will be leading ‘Art in the Open Air’ walking tours of St Helier’s public sculptures and monuments. He is also leading cycle tours over the open studios weekends.
Other events taking place in the Royal Square over the three days from 10 am to 5 pm include:
- Jewellery, textiles and collage making demonstrations
- A masterpieces art quiz
- Stone carving demonstrations
- Giant calligraphy art
- Face painting
- Animation and digital drawing sessions
- Jèrriais poetry readings
- Talks and open discussions
The Managing Director of event sponsor Skipton International, Jim Coupe, said: ‘Once again, Sasha and her team have done an amazing job making Skipton Open Studios even bigger and better than last year. We are delighted to support the Jersey Arts Trust and all the artists who are going to make the next three weekends unmissable.”
The exhibition at CCA Galleries International at 10 Hill Street – from 20 to 27 June – is a ‘taster’ for the open studio weekends to follow, featuring works from each of the participating artists.
In addition, the gallery is offering one artist the opportunity to have their work made into a print by the Coriander Studios in London – one of Europe’s longest established and most prolific producers of limited edition prints.
