Shoppers have been enthusiastically flocking to the door of the newly re-opened Cancer Research UK Jersey charity shop. The outlet, based on Union Street, is bucking the Internet shopping trend and encouraging people back to the high street. It generated a fantastic £1500 for the charity in its first week of sales.

The local committee is proud of the fact that the outlet is the only Cancer Research UK retail outlet across Britain that is managed on behalf of the local committee. The team has gone to huge efforts to redecorate and open just in time for Christmas shoppers.

Chairman of Cancer Research UK Jersey Committee, Robert Christensen, opened the shop on 4th December. Chris Babb, Senior Area Volunteer Manager for the South West of England and the Channel Islands, flew over especially to support the opening.

Thanks to generous donations from the general public and other retailers there are hundreds of items available including clothing, shoes, books, china, Christmas decorations and jewellery. A number of brand new products have also been specially contributed by a private donor.

Margaret East, Manageress, says:

‘We are so very thankful for all the donations that have been brought in and would appreciate any more that will take us through this busy shopping period. We have some excellent pieces already that are sure to raise much needed funds for Cancer Research Jersey.’

Robert Christensen, Chairman, Cancer Research UK Jersey Committee, commented:

‘I am delighted at the response to the re-opening of the shop. I am sure it will continue to attract Christmas shoppers not just through the Christmas period but also throughout the year. Outlets such as this raise truly valuable funds for Cancer Research UK so we really appreciate the support the general public has shown us. Special thanks must go to our volunteers and donors also to those who have supported the refurbishment of the shop, including the team from Amalgamated Facilities Management.’

The charity would appreciate more volunteers to help with managing the shop. If you are unable to deliver your donations to the office please call Margaret who will arrange for collection on 01534 721458.
