Samaritans Open Throughout Christmas

Jersey News, 23 December 2009 – The Samaritans are expecting to receive a call every six seconds, nationally, over the Christmas period.

The charity typically receives ten calls a minute during the festive period, and, locally, Jersey Samaritans will be open 24 hours a day over the Christmas weekend to support those for whom the festive season is not a happy time.

While other agencies and support organisations take a break, Samaritans continue to provide round the clock support by telephone to those in despair. Islanders can simply call 725555, or 08457 90 90 90, to speak anonymously and in confidence about anything that is troubling them.

Samaritans are also available for a face-to-face chat at the Hue Street centre from noon to 10pm each day, including Christmas Day, and by email on jo@samaritans.org.

Jersey Samaritans Chairman, Graham Christmas, said: “For so many people the season of goodwill and joy can actually be a season of loneliness and despair. Over Christmas and new year, we often receive calls from people who are alone or separated from loved ones, and people for whom the Christmas celebrations cast a spotlight on the difficulties they are facing.”

This year, one in ten calls to Samaritans has been related to the recession, debt, employment issues and housing difficulties. Nationally, Samaritans receive 5,000,000 calls each year, and in 2008 Jersey Samaritans took 21,000.
