Record breaking year for Macmillan Jersey Rowathon

This year’s Indoor Rowathon in support of Macmillan Cancer Support (Jersey) is on course to raise a record breaking £25,000.

A record 47 teams participated in the event, which took place at the indoor tennis centre at Les Ormes on Saturday May 26th and involved teams of six people rowing the equivalent of Sark to Jersey (30,000m). The event, which is now in its third year, is sponsored by RBS International.

The fastest men’s team was ‘Just do it’ from Jersey Rowing club in a time of 1.45.16. Jersey Netball’s Team Jets won the ladies category while Carrefour Gym won the mixed category in an event record of 1.49.48. Awards were also presented to IFG Trust for the best trust company team and RBS International’s Real Estate team for best bank team.

Andy Smith, RBS International, added: “We are delighted that this year’s Rowathon has raised a record breaking amount of money for Macmillan Jersey. The event grows in stature each year and the new venue, one minute rowing challenge and presence of Olympic rower Toby Garbett’s really added to the event. ”

Brian Frith, Chairman of Macmillan Cancer Support (Jersey), commented: “The Rowathon was an excellent event and we were really impressed by the camaraderie between teams. The money raised will make a significant difference to Macmillan Jersey in supporting cancer patients and their families in Jersey. Macmillan Jersey is extremely grateful to RBS International for its ongoing support of the charity and the instrumental role employees take in the production of the Rowathon.”
