Proposed pedestrian improvements for Gloucester Street and The Parade

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) would like to hear what the public think of its proposals to improve facilities for pedestrians in The Parade and Gloucester Street.

In order to get more people walking, TTS is improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists as promised in the Sustainable Transport Policy. This latest project is principally aimed at helping people cross outside the main entrance to the Hospital in the Parade, and at the junction with Gloucester Street.

A number of improvements are proposed which include:

• Moving the pelican crossing by the old A and E entrance closer to the main hospital and new A and E entrance.
• Narrowing the traffic lanes on the Parade outside the Hospital to create a buffer between the traffic and parked cars
• Creating kerb build outs in line with the park side footpaths so that it is easier for pedestrians to cross the road.
• Increasing the size of the traffic splitter island at the junction of Gloucester Street and the Parade to give pedestrians more room
• Creating chevron parking on the section of Gloucester Street between The Parade and Cannon Street.

Together, these minor measures should make this area a great deal better for the many pedestrians that walk through the area, including many who access the Hospital or commute to work on foot.
