Prince’s Trust students host ‘Come Dine With Me’

Nine students from the Prince’s Trust XL group delivered by the Jersey Youth Service at Le Rocquier School are planning, cooking and serving a meal for invited guests on Friday 08 March. They are hosting their own ‘Come Dine With Me’ as part of the training to improve their life skills.

Chicken tikka masala, sausage and apple pie and margarita pizza con l’uovo (with egg) will be on the menu, with desserts of meringue nest and strawberries, Neapolitan ice cream or chocolate sybil cake.

The students – all in Year 10 or 11 – are working towards the XL award and this unusual event is part of the ‘Using Cooking Skills in a Domestic Kitchen’ unit part of the award.

In the run-up to the event the three teams of young people taking part have had to:
• design a two-course menu with main course and desert
• carry out a price comparison exercise at two local supermarkets for the ingredients required
• decide who to invite
• make invites and send out along with the menu
• prepare a presentation to deliver on the day showing their achievements
• prepare a seating plan
• carry out various health & safety in kitchen exercises.

Finally this Friday they will spend the morning preparing the meal and will sit down with their guests in the Youth Service’s La Motte Street Diner to enjoy their hard work. The guests include staff from the Youth Service and Le Rocquier School, and representatives of the Prince’s Trust.

“This is a really important step for them and will help these students gain confidence and skills they will need once they leave school,” said Senior Youth Worker Nathan Le Mottee. “A challenge like this really captures their imagination and motivates them to use the skills they’ve gained.”

The students have also completed the ‘Developing group & teamwork communication skills’ unit and it is the first time this has been run with students at Le Rocquier.
