Macmillan Cancer Support (Jersey) has been nominated as Jersey Post’s charity of the year for 2014 with a fundraising target of £20,000, enough to fund the Macmillan Jersey Service for one month. Macmillan Jersey was chosen based on staff nominations and was endorsed by a Jersey Post employee who has used the Macmillan Jersey service during his cancer journey.

Lloyd Mourant, who works for Jersey Post, said: “I’m really pleased that Jersey Post has chosen to work with Macmillan Jersey in 2014. They provide such a fantastic service to patients, their families and even friends. I honestly don’t know how I would have managed without them when I was diagnosed.”

The partnership includes Jersey Post becoming the official sponsor of The Jersey Post Macmillan Jersey Cycling Challenge, which will take place in September and will see 25 local cyclists peddling from Venice to Genoa to raise funds for Macmillan Jersey. Each cyclist will raise a minimum of £1,800 in sponsorship for Macmillan Jersey.

Macmillan Jersey are briefing all 400-plus Jersey Post employees over the next week about the work the charity does in Jersey and how it can support them or anyone they know who may be affected by cancer. The charity will also hold outreach events for the community at the Post Office in Broad Street throughout the year.

Lauren Perchard-Rees, Cancer Specialist and Centre Manager at Macmillan Jersey, said: “Jersey Post are a fantastic community-focused business and we feel that this partnership is a great opportunity for us to reach more Islanders and raise awareness of our service here in Jersey and what we can do to help anyone affected by cancer. We’re thrilled to be working with all the staff and posties.”

Kevin Keen, Chief Executive of Jersey Post, said: “Macmillan Jersey was a very clear favourite among our staff for this year’s charity of choice. Having had colleagues who have
used the service, and knowing how many people are touched by cancer, we’re all right behind doing as much as we can for the charity this year.”

In order to raise funds, Jersey Post will be undertaking a wide array of fundraising activities throughout the year, including supporting Macmillan Jersey with core fundraising events by entering a team in the Macmillan indoor Rowathon on the 17th May and in the Macmillan Corporate Golf Day on the 10th October; and holding coffee mornings for Macmillan Jersey’s Greatest Coffee Morning in September.
