The team at Jersey’s Atlantic Hotel is celebrating alongside local graduate Katie Henry who has recently been awarded First Class Honours in her Bachelor of Science degree in Tourism Management.

Katie, 22, from St Brelade was educated at Jersey College for Girls and went on to study Tourism Management at the University of Surrey, the same institution from which Atlantic Hotel owner Patrick Burke graduated.

Katie was the first student to take advantage of a newly developed placement scheme between the University of Surrey and The Atlantic Hotel. She spent her third year (2010 – 2011) undergraduate placement at The Atlantic, where she gained direct hands on experience in all aspects of the industry. The Atlantic Hotel has continued to welcome undergraduate placements and to date three students have enjoyed this unique opportunity to learn directly from the team at this prestigious establishment.

Commenting on Katie’s success Patrick Burke said: “It is absolutely wonderful news that Katie Henry, the Surrey University student who pioneered this placement programme, achieved First Class Honours. At The Atlantic we work hard to promote and nurture talent in the hospitality industry, we have an excellent relationship with Highlands College locally, which complements this placement programme along with a number of other educational initiatives. We wish Katie every success in her future career.”

Katie who has now returned to the Island said, “I was naturally delighted to achieve a First Class Honours degree in my chosen field. The team at The Atlantic Hotel were all incredibly supportive and Mr Burke ensured that I was exposed to a full range of positions and responsibilities during my placement year. I was very lucky to have shadowed Hayley Brockwell, Reservations Manager, who has thirty years experience and I also assisted Events Manager Anna Robins and was even able to spend some time learning directly from Mr Burke. I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at The Atlantic and I am positive that this valuable experience helped me in my final year studies and most definitely contributed towards my success in my final exams.”
