Leading mediation lawyer to speak at trust conference next week

Richard PirieIsle News, 18 September 2009 – A number of high profile speakers will be in attendance at a trusts and trustees conference next week. Key speakers will include John Harris, Director General of the Jersey Financial Services Commission, Colin Powell, Chairman, Offshore Group of Banking Supervisors and mediation expert, Ian Marsh of Familydr Ltd.

The conference, which will take place at L’Horizon Hotel on  Monday 21st September will host more than 50 delegates.

‘The conference will cover a number of topics and is a great refresher following the summer.  When I planned the conference with Offshore Professional Conferences Ltd in June life under the G20 regime was the hot topic and still is, so I was delighted when Colin Powell and John Harris both agreed to speak at the event. Colin’s presentation will cover the global perspective and John will talk about what it is likely to mean in terms of regulation for the finance industry,’ said conference chairman Advocate Richard Pirie, Head of Wealth Planning and Estates at Crill Canavan.

Additional topics to be covered over the two days will include insolvency within trust structures, potential trustee liability for investment losses and mediation of family and trust disputes.

Ian Marsh, formerly of Withers, one of the world’s leading private client firms, and founder of Familydr Ltd will be talking around the subject of mediation and how family conflicts differ from commercial disputes.  With more than 30 year’s experience with private client law firms in London and New York, Mr Marsh set up his own firm in June 2006. Mr Marsh has considerable experience of the financial, legal and family issues which lead families to structure and manage their wealth as they do, how and why disputes generally arise amongst them, the sorts of solutions to their disputes that can be made to work in practice and perhaps more importantly, those that can’t. Over the past ten years, he has been instrumental in settling a number of long-running, multi-party, multi-jurisdiction family disputes.  Mr. Marsh specialises in both cases based in England and throughout the offshore centres.

Mr Marsh is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a founder member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists. He is also a Chartered Tax Advisor and a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.
