The 14th annual Le Tournoi Football Challenge will take place at Les Quennevais Sports Centre over the weekend of 28th and 29th June.
Le Tournoi co-founder Andy Le Seelleur described the event as the biggest football tournament in the Channel Islands and is looking forward to welcoming many new faces as well as more established players: “It’s amazing to think that in 2001 we organised what was meant to be a one-off weekend event and here we are fourteen years later catering for 1,000 players of all ages. Not only does the event raise thousands of pounds for a number of local good causes but we work hard to showcase various charities by inviting them to take part in coaching sessions and raising disability awareness amongst those who play or watch over the two days”.
Over the years, strong relationships have been built with coaching staff from Premiership clubs Arsenal and Everton, and they will return this year to ensure that all 700 young players will enjoy a morning of high quality coaching. Dean Miller, a coach with Arsenal’s Community Development Programme said that he and his colleagues thoroughly enjoy their annual visit: “We’ve been coming for six years now and the guys see it as one of the highlights of their season. The kids are always impeccably behaved and the general standard of skills is very high”.
As well as coaching during the weekend, the visitors will spend the Friday working with various local primary schools and will attend the evening soccer initiative in the Millennium Park, organised by the Community Sports Development team.
The Mini’s Challenge is for teams in the U8’s to U14’s age groups and the Adult Challenge will once again be open to corporate teams, where six players in the ten-strong squads need to work for the business they are representing.
This year there is a particular emphasis on encouraging entrants in the Ladies and Veterans Challenges, which have been really successful in previous years but sadly have seen a bit of a decline recently.
