Lay members appointed to Electoral Commission
Three lay members have been appointed by the States to serve on the Electoral Commission.
Dr. Jonathan Renouf, Professor Ed Sallis and Mr. Colin Storm were appointed by the States today (Wednesday 16th May 2012) and will serve on the Commission with the Chairman, Senator Sir Philip Bailhache, and States members Connétable Juliette Gallichan and Deputy James Baker.
The Commission has been set up by the States of Jersey to make recommendations on the future composition of the States Assembly. It will examine the classes of States member; their constituencies and mandates; the number of States members and their terms of office.
Commission Chairman, Senator Bailhache, said he was pleased that the Commission would now be able to start work.
He said: “This is an important project that will examine the current structure of the States Assembly and make recommendations for its improvement. I look forward to working with Dr. Renouf, Professor Sallis and Mr. Storm, as well as my States colleagues, Connétable Gallichan and Deputy Baker, to develop the right proposals for the Island.
“We intend to start work immediately, and will begin by asking members of the public for their views on the current structure of the States Assembly and how they think it could be improved.
As soon as the Commission has held its first meeting, an announcement will be made about how people can contact the Commission to give their views.
