Judo clubs are first to meet new standard

Two judo clubs are the first sports organisations in the Island to qualify for Jersey Clubmark, a new scheme that promotes high quality and helps clubs improve what they do. The accreditation has been introduced as part of the ‘Fit for the Future’ sports strategy and will help sports clubs develop and work together.

Jersey Judo Club and Torakan Judo Club have achieved Jersey Clubmark after meeting high standards in four key areas:

  • Sports Club Management
  • Safety in Sport
  • Quality Coaching and Competition
  • Off-island Travel Provision

Deputy Roy Le Herissier, Assistant Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, said: “Jersey Clubmark aims to recognise high quality junior sports clubs and the contribution that they make to the development of sport in the Island. They provide valuable opportunities for people to take part in sport but also to compete if they wish. The clubs also play an important role in helping our talented young athletes to realise their potential. Jersey Clubmark is an important element of the sport strategy and supports clubs that want to improve participation and develop their sport.”

Nikki Holmes, Sports Club Officer, said: “It is great that Jersey Clubmark is able to provide recognition to junior sports clubs in the Island who have demonstrated good practice. Our clubs do an amazing job and it is right and proper that we are now able to publicly celebrate all their hard work. There are a number of clubs who are almost ready to gain Jersey Clubmark status themselves which just goes to show that the standard of sports clubs in Jersey is very high.”

Mike Bisson of Jersey Judo said: “We are very pleased to have been awarded the Jersey Clubmark award and it shows that we have everything in place to be a successful sports club for children of all ages to attend. All our coaches and volunteers have to go through a process that enables them to work with children and the qualifications have to be updated regularly and it is satisfying that this has been recognised by Education Sport and Culture. By having the Clubmark you can be confident that all the necessary checks and policies are in place. I would like to thank Nikki for her assistance in guiding both clubs in gaining this award.”
