JT Staff Raise £6k for Durrell
Jersey News, 3 March 2010 –
Generous staff at Jersey Telecom have raised more than six thousand pounds for Durrell after voting to support the Wildlife Conservation Trust as the telecom firm’s chosen charity in 2009.
Each year JT selects a local charity as the focus for its internal fund raising efforts and staff are invited to nominate, and then vote for, their preferred choice.
The support comes at a welcome time for Durrell, whose funding issues have been widely reported over the past few months.
Tim Ringsdore, Managing Director of Jersey Telecom, said: “I am absolutely delighted to be able to present Durrell with a cheque for over £6,000, all of which has been raised through the generosity and hard work of Jersey Telecom staff. Our company motto is ‘worldsmart, homegrown’ and if ever there was a charitable organization that epitomized that approach, it has to be Durrell.”
The money was raised throughout last year using a variety of imaginative schemes, including: cake sales, soup sales, fancy dress walks, raffles, music quizzes, the sale of second hand computers and car boot sales.
Paul Masterton, Chief Executive of Durrell, said: “We have a long-standing relationship with JT and this latest donation is hugely appreciated at a time when we are working extremely hard to raise additional funds. The fact that it has come directly from the efforts of JT staff makes it even more special and we are very grateful to everyone involved.”
As well as the money raised by employees, JT is also supporting Durrell with a new ‘SIM only’ mobile phone service that allows business customers to reduce their carbon footprint by forgoing new mobile handsets in place of a donation to Durrell. The telecoms firm has also supported Durrell through its telephone directly recycling scheme and paperless billing initiative.
