Kickboxing World Champion Monika Markowska has added two more titles to her collection.
In February, she won her full contact fight at the British Championship and last weekend the fourth degree black belt won the International Kickboxing Federation’s Atom Weight title.
Miss Markowska, who works for Garenne Group, won the title after a rematch against IKF 5 Nations and European Champion Kelly Mainwaring. The first fight took place in March and after a very tough fight, the judges surprised the audience and the contestants by declaring a draw.
‘That wasn’t what we expected as everyone, including Kelly, thought that I had won and so we immediately asked for a rematch and I knew that I would need to win decisively or with a knockout,’ said Miss Markowska.
The rematch, which took place on Saturday in Miss Mainwaring’s home town on Neath, was the culmination of nine weeks of intense preparation. Miss Markowska trained twice a day, travelled every weekend to the UK and Ireland for sparring sessions and spend a week boxing, kickboxing, thaiboxing and doing taekwondo to ensure her mind and body were ready.
‘The fight was very tough and the first two rounds of two minutes were very close but I took the lead in the third round and kept it for the fourth and fifth. This time the judges’ decision was unanimous and I won my second world title – this time from the International Kickboxing Federation,’ said Miss Markowska.
‘Winning the WAKO World Championship was one of the best feelings in the world and winning the IFK title is just as good. I want to say thank you to my coaches, Garenne Group who sponsor me and to my friends and family for their support. I couldn’t do it without them.’
Miss Markwoska is now preparing for a tournament in Italy with the British team next month and will be taking part in Battle of Jersey 3 at Fort Regent on 21st July.
