A Scot named as Britain’s best mobile ice cream seller says that using award-winning Jersey ice cream helped him to scoop the title.

John Harkins (30), from Renfrewshire, purchased his first ice cream van when he was just 16. Now he has a fleet of three vehicles, serving the local community and venturing further afield to attend trade shows, weddings, corporate events and festivals.

‘I take pride in offering Jersey Dairy ice cream – it’s a great product,’ said John after receiving the Ice Cream Alliance’s ‘National Mobiler of the Year’ award, sponsored by Perfect Health. ‘I buy other ice creams but Jersey is the tops.

‘I even use the Jersey Dairy logo on my business cards and leaflets as I am very keen to advertise the fact that I use it.’

The award was made in recognition of John’s enthusiasm, innovation and excellent customer service in supplying his customers with their favourite treat.

As a boy John manufactured candyfloss and popcorn and sold them to ice cream sellers, saving his profits until he had enough to buy his first van.

‘I love mobiling. I have been brought up in a mobiling family and have been in and around ice cream from an early age. Ice cream is in my blood!

‘I am constantly creating new flavours and taste sensations so that every time a customer comes to my van they get a unique and special experience.

‘It’s all about giving the customer what they want. Kids like quite sweet ice cream but if I am at an agricultural show with an older clientele I will make more Jersey ice cream.’
