Consolidated Minerals, one of the businesses attracted to move to the Island by the Locate Jersey team, has launched a scholarship that will benefit Jersey students with immediate effect. The Consolidated Minerals Scholarship scheme will, tonight, see the first two students presented with their funding for the forthcoming academic year.

First year student Luke Gallichan is leaving the Island this weekend to commence his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering at Bath University. Third year student Christopher Le Cornu is due to leave Jersey next weekend to resume his MSci Geoscience studies at Durham University. They are both receiving a scholarship fund of £3,000 coupled with the offer of related work experience with Consolidated Minerals. It is anticipated that this will take the form of 3 to 4 weeks on location in Western Australia, where Consolidated Minerals was founded, to see first-hand the work of this privately-owned business, and learn more about the mining career opportunities available to the students once they graduate. The successful candidates were chosen from 25 scholarship applicants, following a rigorous seven-month application and interview process by the Consolidated Minerals team.

‘Since we established our head office in Jersey in September 2010, we have focused on contributing to the Jersey economy and making a beneficial impact in the community which has been so welcoming to us,’ explains Peter Allen, Managing Director of Marketing for Consolidated Minerals. ‘We have grown from an initial team of three to thirteen, with seven new recruits being sourced from the Island. With the launch of the Consolidated Minerals Scholarship, we are excited to be providing exciting opportunities for Jersey students. Mining is a fascinating and hugely rewarding industry to be involved in, for both male and female candidates and we are delighted to be in a position to provide an alternative career choice to local students.’

Consolidated Minerals is an excellent example of how the Island is benefiting from its concerted inward investment campaign to communicate that ‘Jersey is open for business’. Wayne Gallichan of Locate Jersey says: ‘The launch of this Scholarship is testament to the fact that inward investment businesses don’t just benefit the Island through tax revenues. The businesses we are attracting are growing their teams by recruiting locally; are diversifying the economy and providing exciting career opportunities in alternative industries, as well as investing in the community through sponsorships and scholarships. We commend Consolidated Minerals for this launch and the opportunities it will present to Jersey students in the years ahead.’
