The head of the group that operates Jersey’s bus service will be the guest speaker at the IoD Jersey branch lunch this month.
At the lunch, taking place at the Grand Jersey on Tuesday 8th October, Dai Powell, Chief Executive of HCT Group – the parent company of Liberty Bus – will give a talk on ‘Social Enterprise in Business’, outlining his views on the role businesses play in the local communities in which they operate and suggesting where businesses might look to enhance how they engage with those communities.
HCT Group is a large-scale, award-winning social enterprise in the transport industry, operating transport and training services from twelve depots across London, Yorkshire, Humberside, the southwest and the Channel Islands. Dai has been Chief Executive of the Group since 1993 and has led the organisation as it has grown by more than a hundredfold – from a small community transport provider into an award-winning national social enterprise.
In November 2012, Dai won Social Enterprise Leader of the Year at the SEUK awards. He is a board member of Big Society Capital, is the Chair of the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC) and a Social Enterprise UK board member. Dai was awarded an OBE in 2006 for services to disabled people.
Steven Hunt, Chairman of the Jersey IoD Events committee, said:
“Under Dai Powell’s leadership, HCT Group has grown dramatically across the UK as a business, based firmly on its approach to being a social enterprise. This success is evidence that engaging positively with local communities in this way can actually prove to be a strong and robust strategy for business success and not just a desirable add-on. With businesses in Jersey increasingly alert to the importance of maintaining positive links with the community, I am delighted that Dai, who has such as wealth of experience in this area, is able to join us as our guest speaker at our next lunch event.”
The IoD lunch is on Tuesday 8th October at the Grand Jersey and is open to both members and non-members of the IoD. The lunch starts with networking drinks from 12:00pm and finishes at 14:00. Tickets are £25, inclusive of drinks and a two-course lunch, wine and coffee, and can be purchased from the IoD Branch Officer, Kirsten Higgins on 610799 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
