Hawksford Group business development director Matt Haynes has successfully undertaken a 215 mile cycle and helped to raise £3,500 for Macmillan, surpassing the target of £2,000.

Mr Haynes was joined on the charity cycle by six friends, Edward Benfield, Hedd Roberts, Ashley Garratt, Adam Sudale, Neville Clements and Stuart Colegate. Of the seven that rode two have recovered from cancer, one recently, so the cyclists understand the true value of the Macmillan nurses and their service.

The group began their gruelling, five-day cycle on Friday 19 July. The route took them across the UK, beginning at St Bees in Cumbria from where they climbed 25,000ft through the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Yorkshire Moors. The route to Robin Hood’s Bay, North Yorkshire was almost entirely off road and so was very challenging for all concerned.

In order to complete their ride the group endured months of vigorous training, including daily cycles and runs. ‘We rode on mountain bikes as most of the route was off-road, so there was plenty of carrying the bikes which could be very challenging,’ said Mr Haynes. ‘Although it was a demanding cycle, it was a great experience which involved the hottest weather of the year, pulling pints in the UK’s highest bar – the Tann Hill Inn, and having my tyre punctured when a dog attacked my bike.’

Mr Benfield added: ‘Macmillan, and in particular Macmillan nurses, offer a fantastic service to all cancer patients which has been invaluable for me and my family. It has been a tough year, but taking on this challenge is the final chapter to my recovery.’

Macmillan is a UK cancer support charity that strives for better cancer care and provides practical, medical and financial support to those affected by cancer. The charity’s ambition is to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer and to inspire millions of others to do the same.
