The Grand Jersey Hotel & Spa is hosting a Jersey cheese tasting event on Sunday 14th September to celebrate the World Jersey Cheese Awards.

An organic and artisan cheese tasting stall and a number of other attractions will mark the occasion, showcasing some of the best Jersey cheese produce from one of Grand Jersey’s leading local suppliers, Classic Herd.

Classic Herd will be bringing a special guest to the festival, Charleen the Jersey cow, who will meet visitors as they arrive on the Terrace at Grand Jersey. There will be an opportunity for people to get their photos taken with Charleen, who will be grazing on a pop-up farm, complete with wood chippings and hay bales.

The World Jersey Cattle Bureau established the World Jersey Cheese Awards in 2008, in order to recognise dairy products from around the world that are derived from a single breed of livestock – the Jersey cow.

Cheese makers from around the world are invited to enter cheeses that are made from 100 per cent Jersey milk, competing with other producers for the title of World’s Best Jersey Cheese. This year’s awards will be held in South Africa and will take place during the World Jersey Cattle Bureau’s 20th annual conference between the 12th and 20th September.

‘Grand Jersey has a great relationship with its local suppliers and we are extremely fortunate to have such a fantastic range of quality and unique products available on our doorstep. We are committed to using fresh, local and sustainable produce in all our restaurants and this event is a great opportunity for us to showcase what one of our leading suppliers has to offer’, said Eamonn Elliott, general manager at Grand Jersey.

‘The Jersey cow is a global success story and it is something that we should be celebrating here in Jersey. There’s going to be lots to see and do at the festival and we are hoping that people will come along and share our passion for cheese, dairy produce and the delightful Jersey cow,’ added Julia Quenault from Class Herd.

The event is free to all Islanders but visitors will be encouraged to donate £1 to Grand Jersey’s chosen charity for 2014, Headway.
