Jersey’s new discrimination law will be the focus of an expert panel discussion taking place this week.
Organised jointly by Mourant Ozannes and the CIPD Jersey Group, the briefing will include contributions from leading human rights QC Kate Gallafent of Blackstone Chambers, Niamh McGarty who is HR Business Partner for HSBC in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, as well as Helen Ruelle and Jessica Roland of Mourant Ozannes.
The conference will examine the implementation of the Discrimination (Jersey) Law 2013, with specific focus on the first Protected Characteristic: Race. If time allows the panel will also discuss plans for legislation against Sex Discrimination following the White Paper published earlier this year, and the forthcoming family friendly laws which are expected to come into force in Jersey in 2015.
Jessica Roland and Helen Ruelle will lead an interactive and informative session on the Channel Island situation; Niamh McGarty will share her recent experience of discrimination issues in the UK from an HR perspective; and Kate Gallafent will give a perspective on general employment practice and discrimination claims based on her extensive experience and recent cases.
Helen Ruelle said: “The introduction of discrimination laws in Jersey has been a long time coming but the moment is now just a few months away and employers need to ensure they understand the full implications for their business of the new legislation. We hope that our panel will give a rounded and experienced insight into the likely impact of the new Discrimination Law in Jersey.”
Cheryl Kaye said: “CIPD Jersey are pleased to be joint badging this event, which hopes to provide local businesses with an improved understanding of the impact the discrimination law may have as well as assist with identifying what practices may need to be considered to ensure an harmonious workplace is maintained.”
The conference takes place at the Royal Yacht Hotel, Weighbridge, Jersey on Thursday 12th June between 12pm and 2.30 pm. For more information about attending the conference contact Katie.email@example.com.
