Fostering and Adoption Jersey wants to encourage people to offer their commitment to children in Jersey who need families to look after them.
A new campaign, under the heading ‘Making a space in your life for a child is an amazing thing to do’, has launched across the Island, coinciding with the 2013 National Adoption Week, which runs from 4- 10 November. The aims are to raise the profile of adoption in Jersey and to encourage more people to come forward to become adopters.
After the successful use of a ‘pop-up’ shop for previous campaigns, members from the fostering and adoption team will be using a unit at Liberty Wharf as a drop-in centre. Those people wanting to find out more are invited to come and meet members of the team informally. The drop-in centre is open on Friday 8 November and Saturday 9 November from 10am until 4pm.
Emmy Lindsey, Manager for the Fostering and Adoption Team said adopting a child who needed a home was a wonderful thing to do, but that a lot of people were not sure about the process and what needed to be done.
“Adoption Week is so important in reminding people about the backgrounds of the children who need adoption, and the difference adoption can make to a child’s life,” she said. “We know from existing adoptive families that it can be hard work, but the rewards are huge. Adoption is a chance to transform a child’s life forever.
“As well as raising awareness for adoption on the Island, we want to give the message that we need adopters for children of all ages. We would also like to hear from people who could consider adopting sibling groups, or children with disabilities.
“We are more interested in what people can offer a child than factors such as marital status, being Jersey-born or income level. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences, as long as they can show commitment and a desire to share their family life with a child or children on a permanent basis.”
