Competition for Komodo Dragons

Jersey Opera House is appealing for local children’s creative talent to devise a brand for its latest Children’s Drama Classes for 11 to 13 year olds.

Following the success of the theatre’s inaugural classes; The Dragons (for 5-7 year olds) and The Chameleons (for 8-10 year olds), a brand new class for older children will begin this May, called The Komodo Dragons.

To remain in-keeping with their ancestors, the Komodo Dragons require their own unique identity so once again Jersey Opera House is launching a competition, this time for local 11 to 13 year olds, to design a logo. Melanie Dixon and Mai Longdin won the competitions to design branding for The Dragons and The Chameleons respectively. The young person who creates the best logo for The Komodo Dragons will win a complimentary term of classes plus the honour of seeing their branding adopted by Jersey Opera House.

Theatre Director Jasmine Hendry said: “We are very excited about the new sessions. Less than five years ago children’s drama classes were just a vision. Since inception two years ago, the demand has been huge and classes have proved so popular that it was inevitable that we would have to expand. We are delighted that we are able to offer yet another service to the community, helping youngsters’ development in a positive and unpressured environment. I hope we can continue to grow and offer something for all age groups!”

Drama Teacher Sara Harris commented: “This is the next stage in a child’s development and through the use of drama technique, this age group will be able to explore and develop creative theatre whilst working as part of a team. Drama is proven to help improve social skills, motivation, confidence and an individual’s general well-being. Incorporating techniques such as mime, improvisation, physical theatre, role-play, freeze-frame, script work and a whole host of other resources, the aim is to equip young people with transferable social skills for life.”

Competition entries need to be received by Jersey Opera House by Friday 2nd May either by email ( or by post. The Komodo Dragons sessions start on Thursday 8th May. During term-time, classes will run every Thursday from 6-7:30pm at a cost of £85. For more information and to book a place please contact
