The Jersey Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is seeking to identify one young person from the Island aged between 18 and 29 to attend the Sixth Commonwealth Youth Parliament which will be held in Mmabatho, North West Province, South Africa from 2nd to 8th November 2014.
The overall goal of the Youth Parliament, which will be attended by young people from across the Commonwealth, is to strengthen the democratic process in the Commonwealth by deepening understanding of parliamentary democracy among the participants and providing a forum for them to express their ideas, concerns and expectations. The Youth Parliament will mirror proceedings in parliament with debates, question time and committee work.
The Jersey CPA Branch is looking for a candidate who has an interest in current affairs and, in particular, Commonwealth and parliamentary matters. The young person selected will need to demonstrate potential leadership qualities and must have a good knowledge of the way in which Jersey is governed. The Jersey Branch will meet the costs of the participant’s travel to South Africa and all accommodation and other expenses in Mmabatho will be met by the North West Province Branch.
Connétable Len Norman, Chairman of the Jersey CPA Branch, said “A number of young people from Jersey have attended previous Commonwealth Youth Parliaments and they have always found the event to be a fascinating experience with the chance to meet young people and parliamentarians from across the Commonwealth. Several have come back to Jersey and taken an active interest in local politics and one, Deputy Sam Mézec, is now an elected member of the States. I would encourage any young person with relevant skills and experience to put their name forward and I would also ask parents and others to bring this matter to the attention of any young people from Jersey who are currently out of the Island.”
Young people who wish to apply to participate in this event should send a full CV and a letter of application setting out why they believe they are suitable to represent Jersey to Mr. Michael de la Haye, Honorary Secretary, CPA Jersey Branch, States Greffe, Morier House, St. Helier, JE1 1DD (firstname.lastname@example.org) no later than Tuesday 15th July 2014. After an initial selection process a number of shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview in late July.
