For the first time over 200 people took part in the Peter Ward Memorial Jersey Christmas Walk, raising a total of £16,000 for charity and hitting the fundraising target for the year.
The walk took place on December 7th 2013 and consisted of three different courses of 44, 26 or 18 miles, plus an 18 mile relay option for teams of up to 4 walkers.
The proceeds of the event are to be split between Jersey Hospice Care, which will receive 75% of the total and the Motor Neurone Disease Association 25%.
The walk established in 2002 by Laurent Thebault, is in memory of his friend and RBS International colleague Peter Ward who sadly passed away from skin cancer earlier that year. Taking place annually on or near the shortest day of the year, the walk covers Jersey’s coastline and has to date raised over £180,000 for charity.
Lynsey Beahan, Fundraising Manager at Jersey Hospice Care said: “We are delighted that last year’s Jersey Christmas Walk hit the fundraising target. A big thank you goes to all the walkers who supported us, RBS International and to the organisers Tim Renault and Laurent and all their helpers who put so much time and effort into making the event the success it is.”
Jerry Whitsey, Chair of the Corporate Sustainability Board at RBS International, commented:
“The Peter Ward Memorial Jersey Christmas Walk is an important event in the RBS International fund raising calendar. Twelve years on it continues to raise a significant amount of money for local charities. We would like to thank the generosity of those who sponsored the walkers who trotted up 4,898 miles between them.”
The presentation evening will take place at La Fontaines Tavern St John on Tuesday 4th March.
