Co-operative EcoFund to donate to environmental projects in the Channel Islands

THE Channel Islands Co-operative Society will be donating thousands of pounds to environmental projects across the Channel Islands again this year.

The EcoFund was launched in 2008 when the Society led the way in recycling, by levying a 5p charge on one-trip carrier bags in an attempt to reduce the number used. In the first year alone bag consumption was cut by an astonishing 90%. The ongoing funds raised each year since from bag sales are distributed on an annual basis to worthy environmental initiatives.

The Society’s Chief Commercial Officer, Jim Plumley, said as a major local employer The Channel Islands Co-operative Society was dedicated to the communities in which it operates.

‘Once again we are looking for projects and initiatives across the islands that are helping to protect or regenerate the environment we all live in. Obviously we cannot support every project that is submitted but we do our best to help as many people as possible. For those who were unsuccessful last year, I would encourage them to reapply this year and of course we hope to hear from new initiatives,’ he said.

The fund is now in its 7th year and since its inception The Channel Islands Co-operative Society has paid out over £280,000 to assist environmental causes in the islands.

Mr Plumley said each application would be given thorough consideration as the Society takes its responsibility towards the environment very seriously.

‘We believe that successful commercial business and strong ethics can co-exist and we put sustainability and the environment at the heart of our business. We will continue to explore ways to lead and support causes and projects that look to make a difference in our islands,’ he said.
