CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY FOR HEADWAY

Headway JerseyJersey News, 22 December 2009 – Christmas has come early for Headway Jersey thanks to a generous donation from one local company.

The charity has taken delivery of two Nintendo Wii consoles and a second plasma television for the centre in Springfield Road, courtesy of RBC Wealth Management’s annual donations fund and staff fundraising.

‘This kind donation has enabled us to purchase equipment which will be invaluable to the rehabilitation of many of our members,’ said Ray Cooper, Chief Executive Officer for Headway Jersey.

‘One of the effects of brain injury is a lack of balance and co ordination. The use of Wii consoles will enable our members to participate in alternative exercise to regain these abilities whilst having fun and enjoying the experience.’

Starting as a small support group for just a few families, Headway Jersey has grown dramatically over recent years to become an organisation with over 100 local survivors of brain injury on its books. Brain injuries come about for a wide variety of reasons including accidents, strokes, tumours, illnesses and even mosquito bites and the charity is seeing an increase in demand for its support services year on year.

‘The equipment is already proving popular with many of our members,’ continued Ray. ‘The advantage is that it can be used at our centre – members are able to participate without the feeling of being watched by anyone other than fellow members.’

Frank McFarlane, who has lived in Jersey for many years and benefitted from the charity’s support, has already started using the Wii console. Frank commented, ‘It really helps with my co ordination and is great fun at the same time. We’re all very grateful to RBC Wealth Management for the gifts. They will be well used.’

Chris Blampied, Managing Director for Royal Bank of Canada (Channel Islands) Limited and Head of Banking British Isles is delighted Frank and others are benefiting from the donation.

‘We are very proud to support local charities and projects through our annual donations fund,’ he said. ‘Our recent donation to Headway is just one of many donations we have made throughout the year to local charities – we are pleased to hear that the money has been put to such important use.’

The RBC Wealth Management annual donations fund distributes grants to charities that contribute to the local community in Jersey and support one of their three key areas of focus; youth and education, amateur sport and health and wellness. Other charities that have benefitted from donations throughout 2009 include NSPCC Jersey, Jersey Hospice Care, ACET Jersey and Jersey Teenage Cancer Trust.
