Bedell Cristin strengthens its banking and corporate team and moves into top tier in Chambers and Partners
Bedell Cristin has further strengthened its banking and corporate group through a series of recent appointments of lawyers with a range of experience from leading law firms in the UK and Jersey and “ascends to the top tier for corporate and finance matters after receiving outstanding feedback from the market.” (Chambers and Partners 2013)
Stephen Ferguson, an experienced corporate and funds lawyer, has joined the Jersey office. He has seven years’ experience in corporate and funds work in Jersey and has particular experience in corporate real estate. He qualified as an English solicitor with Eversheds LLP and practised corporate law with Bond Pearce before moving to Jersey.
Amy Fairfoull, an experienced corporate lawyer, has joined the Jersey office from Eversheds LLP. She has six years’ experience in a wide range of banking, corporate finance and commercial transactions.
Two further hires in the Jersey office are qualified solicitors Chloe Vaughan and Louise Hassell. Chloe trained with a large regional firm in the UK and prior to that worked in finance with PwC. Louise trained at another top tier firm in Jersey and has a range of experience in banking, corporate and commercial transactions.
The latest appointments complement earlier hires to the team who between them have more than 27 years’ experience. These were Antony Clerehugh, a specialist in banking and corporate matters who joined from DLA Piper; Heather Hiram, who specialises in investment funds and regulatory matters and has extensive experience in debt and equity listings, and Mark Nisbet, whose areas of expertise include corporate, banking, capital markets and structured finance transactions.
In Guernsey, Richard Sharp has joined the firm as a Senior Associate. He advises on all aspects of corporate and commercial offshore transactions including acquisitions and mergers, reorganisations, migrations, fund listing services and private equity. He has ten years’ experience including five working at Cobbetts LLP where he advised on a wide range of private and public corporate transactions. Richard is in a team which earlier in the year was further strengthened with the appointment of Tristan Ozanne, who has seven years’ experience at another large local law firm in Guernsey and who specialises in banking and investment funds.
The recent appointments also follow on from the recruitment of Valerie Georges-Thomas, a former partner in the British Virgin Islands office of another leading offshore law firm, who advises on all aspects of hedge funds and private equity funds, and on a broad range of commercial and corporate transactions, to head up the Bedell office in the BVI, and the opening of a Bedell office in Singapore headed by leading BVI lawyer Stephen Adams.
Alongside these appointments, Bedell Cristin has also been elevated to the top tier of the Jersey Offshore Corporate and Finance category in the latest rankings from Chambers and Partners. Chambers and Partners described the firm as being “recognised for its expertise in high value transactions on behalf of clients throughout the financial services sector.”
Peter Byrne, partner and head of the Banking and Corporate group in Jersey, commented:
“This range of appointments in various key jurisdictions in which we have a presence further strengthens our capabilities and depth of expertise. The opening of new offices, the hiring of key staff and the additional experience in cross-jurisdictional matters which they bring to the firm, broadens and deepens the skills available within the firm and signals our ongoing commitment to providing the highest standards of client service.
Despite the still rather uncertain macro-economic environment, particularly in Europe, we have seen an uptick in banking and corporate instructions during this year and our enlarged team and top tier status make us well placed to benefit from the increased workflows.”
Commenting on Richard Sharp’s recruitment in Guernsey, Mark Helyar, Bedell Cristin managing partner in Guernsey said:
“Richard’s considerable experience of offshore transactions, funds and listing matters will meet ever-growing client demand and his experience in cross-border matters will further strengthen the Guernsey office offering.”
