A Very Special Brew for Middle Jersey

Jersey News, 23 January 2010 – Jersey Brewery has produced a very special brew to celebrate Deputy Sean Power’s successful Budget amendment to reject a huge duty increase on alcohol.

Last December the St Brelade Deputy led a surprise States rebellion against proposals

for a 6.2% duty hike on alcoholic drinks and almost 10% rises on fuel and tobacco. He argued that the rises would adversely hit the ‘Middle Jersey’ in tough economic times.

Now the brewers at Longueville have produced an ale in honour of his achievement and what’s more they have called it Middle Jersey!

Deputy Power said: “I am humbled that the Liberation Group sees fit to produce a special brew called Middle Jersey.  I look forward to its arrival and I hope those of us in Middle Jersey will soon be able to order and sample a pint.”

Middle Jersey is a very limited production which will only be available at the CAMRA Jersey Winter Beer festival 2010 at St James on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 February, where more than 40 beers and ciders will also be available. Entry is by ticket only which must be purchased in advance from the Jersey Arts Centre.

The idea for Middle Jersey came from the Chief Executive Officer of Jersey Brewery’s parent company, The Liberation Group, Mark Crowther.

He said: ‘We were delighted when Sean lodged the amendment and even more delighted when he won the backing of the House. Having a vibrant hospitality sector is essential for Jersey and the proposed increases, if approved, would have had a detrimental affect on the pubs and drinks business so what better way to show our appreciation than by producing a beer to cheer the spirits.

Head brewer Paul Hurley and his team have come up with a 4.5% ABV dark beer made with golden hops with a taste of caramel and coffee.
