A local couple got engaged at the ballet at Jersey Opera House on Saturday afternoon.
Nuno Dionisio popped the question to his girlfriend of four years, Ania Zwolinska, after the matinee performance of Sleeping Beauty by the Russian State Ballet & Opera House.
Inspired by the fairy-tale love story and the fact that it was Miss Zwolinska’s birthday weekend, Mr Dionisio decided it was the perfect setting to propose to his long-term girlfriend.
With assistance from the ballet crew and Jersey Opera House staff, 34 year old Mr Dionisio orchestrated the proposal after the curtain came down on the final act.
Pretending to have left something in the auditorium, he went back into the theatre once all the audience had left. Miss Zwolinska was then called in ‘to help look’ for the lost item whereupon the 30-piece orchestra serenaded the pair and Mr Dionisio got down on one knee.
The 45 ballet dancers, who had secretly remained on stage behind the curtain until the bride-to-be had said ‘yes’, then joined the couple and applauded the happy occasion. Mr Dionisio said: “The support and enthusiasm shown by the Opera House and ballet crew was amazing and helped make the occasion even more special than Ania or I could have dreamed.”
The couple met in 2008 when Miss Zwolinska, who is from Poland and now a management accountant, was working in a local sandwich shop and Jersey-born Mr Dionisio had returned to the island to continue his career as a project manager and technical consultant in the finance industry. Their romance began with a few games of friendly squash before becoming something more serious.
The couple celebrated their engagement with a bottle of champagne in the theatre’s OH! Cafébar.
