2010 Jersey Directory marks 65th Anniversary of the Liberation

Jersey News, 2 March 2010 – Deliveries of the 2010 Jersey Directory will begin on Monday 1 March, with the front cover marking the 65th anniversary of the Liberation.  Over the next month, every household and business will receive their personal copy.

Jersey has had a very special relationship with the organisations of the Red Cross since the Occupation, when the International Red Cross ship, the SS Vega, arrived on 30 December 1944 bringing a food parcel for every Islander. So, Jersey Telecom has worked with the Red Cross to source suitable photographs and memorabilia for the front cover of the Directory.

There will be three different covers this year, each of them showing original photographs or memorabilia provided by Bernard Arthur Holley, Lorraine Baudains, Arthur Bailhache, Ted Syvret and Douglas Isherwood.

The 2010 winners were chosen by a judging panel which included representatives from the JEP, BBC Radio Jersey, the Société Jersiaise, The War Tunnels, the Red Cross and Jersey Telecom.

As well as having their photographs featured on the directory front cover, winners also received vouchers for Sunday lunch at the Pomme D’Or hotel, which played a crucial role in the Liberation, and appears on one of the winning covers.

The front covers are:

Cover 1 – Liberation Scene

This photograph was taken on Liberation Day and shows the photographer’s brother holding the Union Flag.  His father was also in the crowd and the camera had been hidden by his father in a space under a shed in the garden throughout the Occupation.

Cover 2 – Thank You Canada

This photo shows three sisters with a display of empty containers from the Red Cross parcels.  Their mother and father made a ‘shop game’ for them by carefully opening the tins from the bottom and saving them.

This year, all three sisters, are getting back together in Jersey to celebrate 65 years of freedom.

Cover 3 – Collage of Red Cross Memorabilia and photo of SS Vega

The Red Cross letter was between a child and his father who was serving in the war.  It also features an original photo of the SS Vega, a Red Cross receipt and a newspaper cutting from 2 January 1945.

Further information can be found inside the Directory and other photographs and memorabilia can be seen throughout the Community Pages.

The recycling campaign for 2009 directories will start on Monday 1 March and finish on Friday 2 April and customers can recycle their old phone books by taking them to one of the 25 schools that are taking part or by dropping them into a number of recycling points located around the Island. These include; the JT shop in Queen Street, the Checkers Superstores at St Saviour and St Brelade, all Checkers Express stores, Co-Op Grande Marché, Co-Op St Peter, Safeway and Parish Halls.  Full details can be found in a 2010 Directory insert.
